What if some of the places you've walked past on Fort Myers Beach have stories you've never heard?
Stories of mysterious footsteps in empty buildings, tragic events that shook the island, unexplained figures appearing in windows, and former residents who, according to local legend, may have never truly left.
This Halloween, the Estero Island Historic Society is inviting Southwest Florida residents to explore the mysterious side of Fort Myers Beach with a special event called "Ghosts of Estero Island: A Halloween Journey into the Island's Haunted Past."
And the best part? It's completely FREE!
Taking place Saturday, October 31, 2026, the event features two presentations exploring the island's forgotten history, unsolved mysteries, tragedies, and ghost stories.
A Halloween Journey Through Fort Myers Beach History
Long before Fort Myers Beach became the popular destination we know today, Estero Island was home to Indigenous communities, early settlers, fishermen, business owners, and generations of families.
Over the decades, the island experienced remarkable growth, devastating hurricanes, and tragedies that became part of local history.
Some of those stories are well documented.
Others have been passed down through generations, gradually becoming part of the island's folklore.
The Estero Island Historic Society's Halloween presentation explores both, using historical photographs, illustrations, and storytelling to bring the past to life.
And some of the stories are surprisingly unsettling.
The Holmes House: Footsteps When Nobody Was There
One of the locations featured is the Holmes House, once a well-known restaurant on Fort Myers Beach.
According to local accounts, employees reported hearing unexplained footsteps and sensing mysterious presences inside the building.
Imagine working late, believing you're alone, only to hear what sounds like someone walking through another room.
Was it simply an old building settling? Sounds traveling through the structure? Or something nobody could explain?
Whatever the cause, the reported experiences became part of the property's local folklore.
The Pelican Hotel: A Christmas Gathering Remembered for Tragedy
Not every haunting story begins with an unexplained sound or shadow.
Some begin with real events that leave a lasting mark on a community.
The historic Pelican Hotel is associated with a tragic Christmas gathering in 1966.
The incident became one of the darker chapters of the island's history and is among the stories explored during the presentation.
The event examines how actual tragedies can become intertwined with local legends as their stories are passed down through generations.
The Mermaid Club: The Murders That Shocked Fort Myers Beach
Another story involves the Mermaid Club and its owners, Jim and Mary Galloway.
In 1953, the couple was murdered, leaving a tragedy that would become part of Fort Myers Beach history.
Decades later, their story continues to be remembered through local historical accounts.
The Halloween presentation revisits the Mermaid Club and the events surrounding the couple's deaths, exploring how the memories of former island residents can live on long after the places they knew have changed.
It's a reminder that some of the most unsettling stories aren't fictional ghost tales.
They're real events that happened in our own communities.
The Mound House: Mysterious Figures in the Windows
The historic Mound House is already one of Fort Myers Beach's most fascinating landmarks.
Built atop an ancient Calusa shell mound, the property preserves evidence of nearly 2,000 years of human history.
But its remarkable archaeological past isn't the only reason people are curious about it.
Local folklore includes stories of mysterious figures appearing in windows and unexplained disturbances around the property.
There is no verified evidence of supernatural activity, but the legends add another layer of intrigue to a location already filled with history.
Mound Key: The Ancient Island Surrounded by Mystery
The journey also takes audiences across Estero Bay to Mound Key.
Long before modern Fort Myers Beach existed, Mound Key was an important center of the Calusa civilization.
The Calusa developed a sophisticated society that thrived along Southwest Florida's waterways for centuries.
Today, the island preserves remarkable archaeological evidence of that civilization.
Its ancient shell mounds, remote location, and centuries of history have also inspired local folklore.
The presentation explores the stories and legends associated with this fascinating island.
A Historic Cottage Transformed for Halloween
The event itself takes place inside the Estero Island Historic Society's historic cottage at 161 Bay Road.
Originally built in 1921, the Davison Cottage once stood along the beachfront before being relocated and preserved as part of the historical society.
For Halloween, the cottage will receive a spooky transformation.
Guests can expect Halloween decorations, themed treats, and a special preview of the historical society's upcoming book exploring the island's murders, mysteries, legends, and darker history.
Costumes are welcome but not required.
And for those who enjoy a little extra atmosphere, the evening presentation offers the chance to experience these mysterious stories after dark.

Sometimes the Scariest Stories Are the Ones That Really Happened
Fort Myers Beach is known for its beautiful sunsets, sandy shores, waterfront restaurants, and laid-back island lifestyle.
But beneath that familiar scenery are centuries of stories that many residents and visitors have never heard.
Some involve ancient civilizations.
Others involve forgotten businesses, former residents, and tragedies that changed lives forever.
And a few have inspired ghost stories that continue to circulate decades later.
This Halloween, the Estero Island Historic Society is giving the community an opportunity to discover that lesser-known history.
Whether you believe in ghosts or simply love learning about the past, this event offers a fascinating look at a side of Fort Myers Beach that doesn't usually appear in travel brochures.
Because sometimes, the most interesting thing about a place isn't what you see today.
It's the stories that refuse to disappear.
